UBUNYE
women reimagining tomorrow, together
problem
South African women of colour creatives face a significant representation gap and structural barriers in the Afrofuturist and speculative design sphere. Current discourse often overlooks their visual contributions and positions them as subjects rather than authors, denying them the creative authority to define their own futures.
This systemic issue prevents women from leading the narratives they create, challenging a colonial past that has historically forestalled African futures. The problem is the lack of a dedicated platform and visible collective to amplify their unique Afrofuturist visions.
design solution
The design solution is Ubunye , a multi-platform campaign and digital/physical archive that positions Afrofuturism as a transformative act of design activism and cultural authorship. Ubunye directly addresses the representation gap by providing a dedicated, immediate platform to amplify the voices and creative authority of South African women of colour.
It fuses African heritage with futuristic technology to establish a new visual language of the future, rooted in local spirituality and collective progress. The solution includes a Website Hub, short films, and a pop-up exhibition to curate and showcase works, transforming cultural vision from an emerging movement into a sustained design philosophy that is inclusive and gender-sensitive.
